About This Site Who is Muhammad? How do his followers view him? Do they see him as a superhuman? Do they attribute any divine qualities to him? What is his message all about? How did he live his life? What did he teach? What is the Islamic worldview and how does it differ from other worldviews? What does Islam teach about human rights? What is Islam's perspective on issues like family, environment, and so on? The goal of this website is to answer these and other questions. It introduces Muhammad, the prophet followed by more than one fifth of today's world population, and introduces his life and message. The website sheds light on the concept of prophethood and explains how Muslims view prophets and revelation. All Muslims believe in and honor the prophets in accordance with Islamic doctrine. Islam teaches that the prophets were a select group of believers chosen by Allah (God) to convey guidance to people and to answer questions such as who created humanity and what is the purpose of the creation. Answers to these questions could not be solved by humans. Only Allah, with His limitless knowledge, could give the answers and lay the path to happiness and prosperity for His creation through His prophets. A prophet's task is to receive Allah's revelation and guidance and teach them to people. The section Prophethood Explained gives more details about this important concept in Islam. Nature of Revelation Nature of ProphetsProphet Muhammad was the Seal of the Prophets, the final in the long line of prophets. He was born and brought up in Makkah, which is located in modern-day Saudi Arabia. He led a simple and moral life and was renown for his honesty and trustworthiness. At the age of 40, Muhammad received the first revelation, which can be translated as follows:
These short verses ushered in a new period in Muhammad's life, a period full of hard work and strife. He was oppressed and persecuted by the ruling tribe, the Quraish, yet he continued his tireless endeavor to deliver the message of Islam. The hostility of the Quraish grew worse. At the same time, Islam began to spread in Madinah, a city 400 kilometres (250 miles) north of Makkah. People of Madinah who had met Prophet Muhammad during the pilgrimage season began converting to Islam. Finally, after 13 years of ceaseless work in Makkah, Prophet Muhammad was commanded by Allah to migrate to Madinah, where he continued to work to establish the nascent community of Muslims and to deepen its roots. The section Who's Muhammad introduces Prophet Muhammad's life. His Life Important Events His HouseholdProphets were sent to present a model after which people should pattern their lives, and Prophet Muhammad was no exception. He was merciful and modest, just and compassionate, honest and trustworthy. He was a loving husband, a caring father, a wise leader, and a brave fighter. The section His Example tells more about his character. His Qualities His RolesMuhammad's message is comprehensive and universal. Its ultimate goal is to bring happiness to people in both this world and the hereafter. The message permeates every aspect of life and establishes guiding principles and ethics. Muhammad taught the oneness of Allah and that there will be a Day of Judgment for all and life after death. He taught that worship is more than prayer; it is any act done for the sake of Allah. Thus Islam seeks to establish justice, defend human rights, raise the status of women, and protect the environment. The section His Message tells more about what Muhammad taught. Faith and Worship Family Issues Human Rights Science & Medicine EnvironmentPeople ask many questions about Prophet Muhammad and his message. You can find the answer to the most popular questions in the Q & A section. If you come across unfamiliar words or terms while reading about Prophet Muhammad on this website or anywhere else, you can use our glossary to find a clear explanation in English. You can also visit the resources section to find further links and books recommended by us. You will often come across the phrase "peace and blessings be upon him" in this website. Muslims use this phrase when the name of any prophet is mentioned, to show their deep respect and love for the prophets. Also note that the Quran was revealed in Arabic and that any translation of the Quran is no longer the words of Allah. Rather, translations merely represent a human attempt to interpret the Quran and to convey its meanings in another language. Thus, translated quotations from the Quran are not considered to be the same as the original Arabic Quran. |
